A Susanville man was taken into custody Monday morning on vehicle theft and stolen property charges after Susanville police found him asleep, in a stolen vehicle, in the parking lot of the Diamond Mountain Casino.

According to details released this afternoon by Police Chief Tom Downing the vehicle was reported missing early Sunday from a residence in the 300 block of North Weatherlow Street. On-scene officers learned that the victim had started her vehicle and left it unattended and unlocked. When she returned, around 5-minutes later, the vehicle was missing and she called the police.

A report was taken and the vehicle information was shared with allied agencies.

At around 7:20 Monday morning officers responded to the parking lot of the Diamond Mountain Casino after receiving a report of a suspicious vehicle with someone possibly sleeping inside. When they arrived officers recognized the suspicious vehicle as the missing auto from North Weatherlow Street.

The sole occupant, identified by police as 35-year old Susanville resident Travis Lee Rutledge, was arrested for vehicle theft and possession of stolen property. He was booked into the Lassen County Jail and is being held on $30,000.00 bail.

The case has been submitted to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.

The Susanville Police Department urges you to not leave your vehicles unsecure while warming them up. Vehicles left idling and unsecure are an easy target for thieves.
