Symphony Announces 10th Season Schedule: Pops Extravaganza this Weekend

A SusanvilleStuff Feature
by Jeremy Couso

Ask any Susanville Symphony fan what their favorite concert is and chances are they will tell you it is the ever-popular Susanville Pops Concert.

The symphony’s annual Pops extravaganzas show off the versatility of the musicians, as the audience gets the luxury of sampling a little of everything; from movie themes to Broadway, rock and roll, jazz and more.

“I love our pops concerts because we can loosen up quite a bit and get silly.” says long-time executive board member and symphony musician Dana Hirsche. “They have always been entertaining but we still give the audience the quality music they expect from us.”

“We have some surprises in store for this weekend’s Pops concerts and I’m sure they will be a big hit. This is such a great concert for families to come and enjoy.” Concert-goers will recognize many of the movie music numbers.

The Symphony's first Pops concert was in May of 2006

I asked Hirsche what piece in particular she thought would be the audience favorite. “Of course, I’m a string player so I think the audience favorite will be Adagio for Strings by Barber, “ she says, “but there is such a variety of music that everyone will have their favorite piece.”

“Every year it is always a mystery as to what our fun loving percussion players will come up with to make the audience laugh.”

The Pops concert marks the end of the Symphony’s season, and already preparations are being made for next year – the symphony’s tenth anniversary.

The 2012-2013 concert season was announced earlier this week and includes the Swing Band performance in the fall, the Magical Christmas concert, the Concerto in February, the Composition Competition in May and the Annual Pops concert will finish out the year in June.

“This next season is a very important milestone for us.” Hirsche explains, “We have lots in store for the community. This is our year to give back to Susanville for being such huge supporters of our efforts.”

The Symphony Society, says Hirsche, has ten great things planned to celebrate ten great years.

The pops concert is also the kickoff for next season’s membership drive. Any symphony fans that purchase their season membership this weekend will be entered in a drawing to win one of two Susanville Symphony Memorabilia Gift Baskets just filled with treasures!

This weekend’s concerts are Friday, June 8th at 7:00pm and Sunday, June 10th at 2:30pm in the Assembly of God Church on Richmond Road.

Tickets are going fast, but are still available at Leslie’s Jewelry in Susanville. Call 257-2920 for ticket information.
