Division 4 NSCIF champs 2023

More good stuff going on at Lassen High!

For the first ever (or in a really long time), LHS Wrestling sent four participants to the state tournament.

Although Deshon Moore, Dathen Moore, Talon Pleau, and Regan Dunten were eliminated, it was a great showing for the team. Looks like new coach Brian Moore has set the bar high for all future wrestlers!

The Lassen Lady Grizz basketball team brought home a section championship after an exciting game vs. the Pierce Bears. The game was lopsided at the start, with the Lady Grizz leading 14-2 after the first quarter.

Pierce finally settled in and was down by 6 at halftime. After the break, Pierce came on strong and went ahead for a few plays. After a critical timeout by Coach Ernaga, the Lady Grizz changed up the defense and put on the press. They re-took the lead and at the end of the third quarter it was 38-36.

Led by Shade and Ryleigh, the team is given a spirited send off on Monday morning

The Lady Grizz ran the 4th quarter, ending the game with a resounding score of 57-43 and becoming the Division IV NSCIF champs.

Graceyn Harlan was given the Character Sportsmanship award for exhibiting respect, fairness, and responsibility throughout the playoffs.

You may have noticed that I am not a sports reporter. I planned on getting the details and some key quotes from Coach Ernaga this morning, but as luck would have it the team is on the road to their next game in the CIF playoffs.

They will play McKinleyville in the Division III bracket on Tuesday 2/28 at 7:00. Former coach Jessica Larson said that they have a good chance at taking down McKinleyville. She added, “It is a fairly even match up on Max Preps. The girls have outstanding teamwork and a strong will to win.”

Shade Satica with dad Doug, Abby Robles and dad Robby, and Ryleigh Hart with dad Arian commemorate the moment with former coach Gary Spafford

On another note, you could look at this championship as being something a few of the starters did for their dads. Teammates Shade Satica, Abby Robles, and Ryleigh Hart are the daughters of three players who made it to the section game in 1991-92 and 1992-93 but fell short.

In the years since, Doug Satica, Robby Robles, and Arian Hart have all coached their kids and others through Lassen Hoops, Baseline, and 7th and 8th grade teams and can now share their pride for their daughters’ accomplishments. And that’s some good stuff.

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
