The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

Last weekend’s cold snap and rainstorm was a harsh reminder that Summer is coming to an end with Autumn and Winter close behind.

While I loved the break from the heat, it was a little overkill when I had to bundle up with sweatshirt, jacket, and even a blanket to check IDs and sell drink tickets at the Hidden Woods Musical Festival.

My friend Becky and I volunteered on Saturday to help out with these tasks and we had a great time. We were stationed in the Big Foot Bar and it was so cool! There was comfy furniture, table games, and a wide selection of beer, seltzers, and ciders to choose from.

It was like a reunion for me as former students came in one after another and recognized their high school English teacher. I loved seeing their familiar faces and hearing these 40-year olds call me “Mrs. Bennett”.

As the skies cleared and the sun came out, we were moved outside to the main stage area and saw “Red Jumpsuit Apparatus” and “Hinder” perform. It was a wonderful venue. The sound was crisp and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

I’m sure many of you were like me and thought you didn’t know any of the music from these bands. But the thing about live music is that it’s not just about the songs. It’s about the production, the crowd, and the energy that is generated with everyone singing along and dancing.

As we checked IDs, we were amazed at the different locations people came from. Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Florida, Arizona, Nevada, and all over California. I can’t wait to hear what the final count was! And I hope it was the first of an annual Lassen County event.

It felt like something we needed.

Kudos to Lassen County Fair Manager Kaitlyn Midgeley and her crew. They threw a great party and it will only get better.

Let’s keep the celebration going with the 12th annual NCCA Golf Tournament this weekend. There are 36 teams signed up and ready to golf starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday August 31st.

Stop by the clubhouse to purchase tickets for our one-of-a-kind raffles, including a kitchen aid mixer donated by Fink Funeral Home, luggage set from Lassen County Foster Youth Services, and a Generac Generator provided by Mike Shively of Elite Construction and Russ and Karli Bates of Nova Electric.

There are many other items and amazing baskets donated by our generous community members and businesses.

Natalie Chrestensen and Craig Hemphill will be grilling up brats and chorizo sandwiches, which you can purchase for your lunch. So, make the trip out to the golf course! It’s always a good time!

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
