Two members of Team Lassen recreate the famous Rose and Jack pose from Titanic

By Shelley Bennett

What’s good this week? Lassen High has been back in school with all students, for a whole week without incident. I know, I shouldn’t type it because somehow I’ll jinx it, but I want to get a bullhorn and stand on Main Street and announce it to all passing motorists.

This last Saturday, the Drill Team and Cheerleaders hosted the very first Reverse GooseChase. You might be familiar with the Reverse Dance, a Sadie Hawkins-like dance where the girls asked the guys. Due to Covid, we had to get creative and borrowed an idea from our FBLA club.

GooseChase is an app (that I have no affiliation with) that helps corporations, school groups, and others create a virtual scavenger hunt. They come up with some of the missions and provide a platform that keeps track of the competition.

On Saturday at 6:00 a list of 16 missions dropped for the competitors to complete. They ranged from the semi-serious (find a historical monument in your community and reenact an important moment) to the silly (teach a stranger how to break dance). More missions dropped at 7 and 8.

Within minutes, submissions started pouring in. The app collects pictures, videos, and texts and assigns a certain amount of points for each mission.

As I looked at the Leaderboard, I laughed watching one of my students (Josh) teaching a man on the street do a rocker step. The man (I’m sorry, I wish I knew your name!) was such a good sport and attempted it while his wife and child looked on.

This was definitely my favorite mission as I saw a Walmart employee attempt a pepper grinder in the parking lot, several willing citizens do the same in store aisles, and Mr. Ray Bailey display some tutting as his neighbor gave instruction.

The students would take a break every so often and pull into the high school for popcorn, sno-cones, and pizza. The parking lot between the gym and portable buildings took on a “block party” feel complete with decorations and music.

I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to see our students laughing, acting goofy, and just being themselves. They all had to get out of their comfort zone and do something silly and they were all a smashing success.

Thank you to all the participants! You made it a great night. And thank you to all the businesses who also participated. Your willingness to let our kids dance in your aisles, collect drink cups, and take pictures with your staff is refreshing. I hope that you got some joy out of it too.

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
