It’s a wrap on “Once Upon a Homecoming” at Lassen High School and it definitely did not disappoint. Maybe it was the distraction we all needed from completing Independent Study packets or maybe it that we all just felt a rush of school spirit, but the dress up days were some of the best I’ve seen.
Disney Heroes and Villains days was the most memorable, with many of our staff dressing as their favorite bad guy (or gal). It was great to see my school friends as Captain Hook, Ursula, Scar, and Yzma, but the icing on the cake was the school ID’s that came out of this. I can’t wait to show mine at Michael’s to get the educator’s discount.
I have always wanted to be Cruella Deville. While I don’t condone her violence against those cute little puppies, I can get behind her drama and fabulous sense of style. Most students didn’t even take a second glance when they walked into class that morning. One even asked, what is the dress up day?
Others told me they really liked how I did my hair that day. (It was a wig) Did they really think I could have transformed my hair from a reddish brown to stark black and white overnight?
At Friday’s assembly, the classes all presented floats and skits with Disney themes. In third place, the Freshman chose to represent the Sugar Rush scene from Wreck it Ralph. One of the racers tried to destroy Homecoming, while Ralph saved the day for LHS.
Tied for second, the Junior class presented Captain Hook (Orland H.S. and Peter Pan (LHS) in a rap battle of smack talk against each other’s quarterbacks, rhyming skills, and football teams. While the Seniors went the nostalgic route with two students portraying Carl and Russell from Up. Their skit ended with a sweet reminder of how friendships should be valued.
The Sophomores took first place with their tribute to Toy Story. This time Zurg threatened Lassen’s Homecoming by kidnapping Queen Barbie, so Woody, Buzz, the green Army men, and many others went to her rescue with Bo Peep saving the day.
Many thanks to the parents and class advisors (Kerrissa Schall, Carrie Satica, Liz Ammon, and Rachel Vincent) who made the floats happen. While Homecoming is one of most exciting events of high school, it is also the longest and most tiring week for the adults involved.
Homecoming celebrations continued on Saturday with an “Enchanted” Evening Under the Stars, hosted by the Sophomore class. Class officers and other student volunteers spent hours earlier in the day fencing off part of the campus, decorating the gazebo, and hanging lights and lanterns.
Despite the chill in the air, hundreds of students enjoyed an evening of music, dancing, and food at this year’s HoCo dance. By the end of the dance I was exhausted and “done” with Homecoming, but seeing all the sparkly dresses, dress shirts, and smiles made me appreciate this “good stuff” and reminded me of why I truly love my job.
Next week: Homecoming royalty!
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
