Welcome to Spring Break! Or as we like to call it in Lassen County: Second Winter.

As I’ve sat here contemplating my assignment, I’ve seen blue skies with white, fluffy clouds, rain, dark storm clouds, and sideways snow. It’s an old joke, the one where if you don’t like the weather, just hang around an hour or two and it will change, but one you should remember when getting dressed in the morning.

When Jacob and Landon were little, I tried to make Spring Break a special time for the three of us. I wanted it to be more than just a week of sleeping in and staying up late. One year Aunt Becky wanted some chicks to add to her hen house, so we asked if we could keep them for the first week.

The weather was much like today’s weather, so we kept them in the house. We quickly learned that baby chicks are like baby humans: hungry, noisy, and constantly going to the bathroom. The boys were good helpers, and we enjoyed our guests, but we were also happy to see them leave.

Another time, there was so much snow at my Grandma’s house that the boys went sledding.

On Sofia’s first Easter, it was snowing so hard we couldn’t make it to Grandma’s at the lake. I still dressed her in a fancy floral dress with matching shoes and cardigan and we hid eggs around the house.

After that, I decided that we would not spend another Spring Break in the snow. We would go someplace, any place, with sunshine and warmth.

That first year it was Disneyland, then San Francisco, Dillon Beach, Santa Cruz, Disneyland again. Even if it was just a few days in Chico, it was just enough Vitamin D to take us until the end of the school year.

The last two years don’t count. Spring Break 2020 seemed to NEVER end. And last year’s happened right in the middle of. . . Football Season? This year’s Spring Break is starting off typically, I’ll let you know how it ends next week.

Happy Easter!

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
