The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

My friend Jessica Larson is always up for a good dress up day. Here we are as variations on Happy Gilmore.

Lights, Camera, Lassen! It’s Homecoming week at Lassen High School and I am hoping that some of our alumni read this article and comment on their favorite homecoming traditions and memories.

Do you remember when the seniors used to TP the town? It seemed like they targeted the parents in the booster club. I know my grandparents’ house on Old Johnstonville Road used to get covered. They always made sure they threw it on the roof and through the branches on the big trees out in front.

I remember performing an epic lip sync in front of the whole school with Ben Harston and Kevin Jones with the lead and myself, Kirsten Sherve, Stacy Lindsey, and Angela Rorie as back up dancers. We spent a morning at the Rorie’s house choreographing our routine, collected our dad’s letter sweaters to wear, and had a blast.

Whenever I hear the song “Blue Moon” it takes me back to the fall of 1987.

Today’s dress up day was a tribute to Adam Sandler and his work. The halls were filled with Happy Gilmores, a few Henry Roths (his character in 50 First Dates), and even a Count Dracula or two from Hotel Transylvania.

The majority wore oversized basketball shorts, baggy t-shirts, sneakers, and baseball hats. It was hard to tell if they were in costume or just their everyday attire.

Tomorrow is Top Gun day and I’m going to be looking for my 10 MLC contestants who should be wearing their iconic green jumpsuits. I think I’m going to emulate the character Charlie on an off day.

Wednesday’s theme is Walk the Runway. I’m at a loss. My colleague Carrie Satica joked that we should dust off our Miss Lassen sashes and tiaras, but I don’t know if I can do that again!

One of the last home Field Hockey games is also on Wednesday. JV start at 3:30 and Varsity play at 5:00.

The Juniors and Sophomores take on the Frosh/Senior team in the annual Powder Puff that evening at 7:00, gates open at 6:00. There is sure to be lots of entertainment provided by the PP cheerleaders!

On Thursday, students will be dressing up like characters from their favorite childhood TV show. We’ll probably see SpongeBob and Patrick, Dora and Diego, Handy Manny, and Phineas and Ferb in our desks that day. Do you think they would recognize any of my favorite TV characters from the 70s?

The nose twitch and blonde flip of Samantha? Or the bucket hat and red polo shirt of Gilligan? I think I’ll just wear my Wonder Woman t-shirt.

Friday is a White Out with the school day ending in a parade on the track and other performances and games planned by the ASB class.

That night the Grizzlies will battle the UPrep Panthers in the league opener. JV plays at 5:00 and Varsity starts at 7:30. Get there early so you can see the amazing floats and cheer for the newly crowned royalty.

Homecoming doesn’t end there though! On Saturday the alumni field hockey game is at 1:00. Then the Class of 2025 is hosting the Homecoming Dance at the Veterans Hall. There are lots of prizes, a fun DJ, and photobooth planned for the evening that starts at 8:00.

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
