Hang on everybody! The folks at the Reno office of the National Weather Service are warning us to be prepared for another round of heavy snow this afternoon and evening, transitioning to rain at the lower elevations overnight.

According to the NWS one to nearly three feet of snow has already fallen throughout the northern Sierra and northeast California and forecasters expect plenty more as the next piece of moisture arrives this afternoon. Snow will increase in intensity in the northern Sierra and northeast California late this afternoon, spreading into the Southern Sierra this afternoon into evening.

Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are predicted west of highway 395 this afternoon…with 1 to 3 inches east of highway 395. Highs 28 to 38. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph in the morning.

Here in the Honey Lake Valley we can expect heavy, wet snow in the evening, then a mix of snow and rain after midnight with snow levels rising to 5,000 feet. Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches west of highway 395, and 2 to 5 inches east of highway 395.

The combination of heavy snow and gusty winds in the Sierra and northeast California tonight into Wednesday will create periods of white out conditions and travel is not recommended.

A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect until 4:00p.m. Wednesday.

Widespread snow is expected through Wednesday with storm total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet.

Winds this afternoon and evening will gusts up to 45 mph and may result in areas of blowing snow with reduced visibility and localized whiteout conditions.

Snow will cause roads to be slick with chain or snow tire restrictions expected. Gusty winds could cause areas of low visibility and localized whiteout conditions due to blowing snow.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

Travel is dangerous! Carry tire chains, flashlight, extra food, water and clothing in your car in case you get stuck. Let a friend or relative know your travel plans, especially if you are heading into the back country.
