A pair of Honey Lake Valley residents in a stolen vehicle led CHP officers on a Friday morning chase that began on Highway 395 and ended at the Fort Sage OHV park, crisscrossing desert roads at the east end of the valley before coming to a halt in a snowbank.
According to details released today by California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn, at around 9:20a.m. an officer with the Susanville CHP observed a gray Honda Accord with a missing front license plate traveling on US-395, near Red Rock Road.
As the officer attempted to make an enforcement stop the driver of the vehicle fled northbound on US-395 at a high rate of speed.
“The Honda continued northbound before making a right onto Doyle Loop Road,” explains Wilburn. “The vehicle then turned onto Hackstaff Road and continued through the desert area before turning around near Herlong.”
The driver of the Honda turned to flee southbound before taking Fort Sage Road towards Nevada. The vehicle was pursued to Fish Springs Ranch, Nevada, where the driver turned around and retraced his path back into California.
The pursuit continued back onto Fort Sage Road and up to the Fort Sage OHV trail head where the vehicle took a series of off-road trails before becoming stuck in the snow.
The occupants of the vehicle fled into the surrounding brush. They were identified by the CHP as 23-year old Milford resident Brenton Joel Sullivan and 26-year old Susanville resident Jessica Lynn Butterfield.
“One suspect was immediately contacted by Susanville CHP units and taken into custody,” said Wilburn. “The remaining occupants were located by a CHP airplane and taken into custody.”
The vehicle was later reported stolen out of Susanville and the incident is under investigation by the Susanville CHP.
The Susanville CHP also thanked the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and their K-9 unit for their assistance with the investigation.
