As part of its ongoing efforts to improve school bus safety, the Susanville Area California Highway Patrol recently conducted a school bus enforcement operation that focused on traffic safety for motorists and passengers adjacent to school busses.
“School bus safety is a key issue in our community,” explains Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn, “and the CHP is committed to upholding school bus safety laws to protect our children, as well as other motorists.”
On September 14th, a school bus enforcement operation was conducted in the local area. The operation focused on drivers who failed to stop when passing a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
As a result of this effort, two citations were issued, two warnings were issued, and an untold number of citizens were educated on the importance of school bus safety.
The CHP strongly encourages members of the community to follow basic safe practices:
• Do not pass a school bus from either direction, when it has stopped, its red lights are flashing, and its stop arm is extended.
• Even when the school bus lights are not activated, always use extreme caution when passing a school bus.
• Be aware and remain ready for the unexpected. Remember, pedestrians don’t have armor!
“The CHP is committed to doing our part to keep the community safe,” said Wilburn.
“We urge every member of the community to be safe and follow the rules of the road. Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
