Dry hot winds didn’t give any aid to the firefighters who were part of a massive response Monday afternoon when a vegetation fire was reported along Richmond Road near the Assembly of God Church.
Just before 3:30 crews from multiple agencies throughout the valley raced to the area just east of Susan Hills Estates to find a vegetation fire burning across Richmond Road and spreading out into the fields. The road was closed as crews and apparatus arrived and staged at the church.
Within minutes firefighters were on the ground and air tankers were ordered.
In the first 20 minutes the fire quickly grew to over ten acres with winds driving flames down into the flats near Mallery Lane.
Air tankers arrived on-scene at 3:52 and began dropping loads of retardant on the head and eastern flank of the fire.
The fire burned several power poles forcing LMUD to disconnect the circuit for the safety of firefighters. Power was restored to most customers within two hours.
At around 5:50p.m. Lassen OES Chief Eric Ewing estimated the acreage of the fire had grown to 42 acres of mostly grass and brush.
Agencies responding to the fire included CalFire, Susanville City Fire, Susan River Fire, Standish/Litchfield Fire, Janesville Fire, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol and Lassen Municipal Utility District.
