Vegetation Fire Quickly Extinguished Despite High Winds

A vegetation fire that started near a homeless encampment on the Susan River Saturday was quickly extinguished by firefighters who were forced to deal with high winds and dangerous fire conditions.

Shortly after 6:00p.m., crews from the Susanville Fire Department responded to the fire which was reported in the area of Skyline Road and Highway 36 in the Susan River fire district.

“Susanville Truck 1 and Squad 651 quickly deployed hose packs off the engines and started a fire attack with progressive hose lay,” explains SFD Engineer Zach Hoffman.

“Due to the high winds, the fire was spreading rapidly and began spotting. T-1, with the assistance of a partial Cal-Fire hand crew, was able to stop the forward progression of the fire, at approximately 12’x 340’. Crews then began mopping up the fire and securing the fire line. Mop-up continued until all heat was extinguished.”

According to Hoffman, the fire started in a homeless encampment and the cause is still under investigation. There was one firefighter injury and no civilian injuries.

“Susanville Fire Department would like to thank those who supported us in this incident: Cal-Fire utility 2286, Forest Service E-332, Engine J-3, Susan River Water Tender, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol.”
