Vernice Luella Palmer – September 17, 2021
Vernice Luella Palmer, 96 of Susanville passed away on September 17, 2021, at Lassen Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was the widow of Harold Palmer. They shared 58 years of marriage together. Vernice was born in Hinsdale, Montana on January 26, 1925, to Ralph and Emma Winship. She was the third of 8 children. Her father passed away when she was six and she had a challenging childhood thereafter. At 17 while in Kalispell, Montana her and a friend found a ride across country to a town near Seattle where they attended a trade school and learned to be certified welders and became one of the famous ” Rosie the Riveters” during World War II.
She worked at the Kaiser shipyard building warships. This is where she met her husband Harold who was also working for Kaiser at the shipyard. They were married 3 months later in a pastor’s home. World War II proved to be hard times but they worked hard and survived. In 1948 they settled in Susanville and raised three daughters.
In her younger years, Vernice worked at Walkers Coffee shop as a waitress for 10 years and was a very active member of the First Baptist Church and later the Community Church always volunteering to bake a cake, provide a meal, serving the lord wherever there was a call. Her grandkids will always remember her by her home cooked meals and desserts. She loved to craft and made many beautiful hand quilted quilts. She was loved by all and had a heart of gold. As her health declined she became a resident of Eagle Lake Village and later Lassen Nursing and Rehabilitation.
She is survived by her daughters Sandy Ormachea (Larry), Dianna Delcarlo ( John) and Darlene Walsh. 7 Grandchildren, Bobby Ormachea, David Ormachea ( Bobbie), Gina DeForest, ( Matt), Johnny Delcarlo ( Kelly), Heather Micone (Jeremy), Cody Walsh and Casey Walsh as well as 18 great grandchildren, Miles, Olivia, Weston, Braden and Evan Ormachea, Zane and Devin DeForest, Dylan, Nathan, Lilly and Joel Delcarlo, Zachary and Kaylee Micone, Chance, Cooper, Rylen, Braelyn and Lana Walsh. She is also survived by twin brother and sister Miles Madison and Mary Fisk and half brother Charles Burgess as well numerous nieces, nephews and a lifetime of friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Harold in 2002, four siblings and her parents many years ago.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 25th., private family viewing at 9:00 am and services at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at the Diamond Crest Cemetery next to her husband Harold.
