Walmart Cardboard Fire Does $5,600 Damage

Police have cited a juvenile after an early evening debris fire behind the Susanville Walmart store on Main Street did more than $5,000 in damage, destroying 14 bales of cardboard stored at the location.

According to Susanville City Fire Captain Mark Ward the department responded to a debris fire, located in the 2900 block of Main Street, at around 6:45 Monday evening to find multiple bales of cardboard were on fire. Assistance was provided by Susan River Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE to completely extinguish the fire.

The fire resulted in damage to 14 bales of cardboard valued at $5,600 and a total of four fire engines responded to the incident.

The Susanville Police Department and the Susanville Fire Department conducted a quick investigation and worked with Wal-Mart to obtain surveillance footage identifying the suspects.

Within hours of the blaze the Susanville Police Department contacted two female suspects, both minors. One suspect was cited for unlawfully causing a fire and released to her parents, the other suspect was not cited. The matter will be referred to probation.
