Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Fire Weather Watch for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from this afternoon through this evening.
Along with eastern Lassen County the affected areas include Surprise Valley and northern Washoe County.
Winds will be out of the southwest at 15 to 20mph with gusts up to 35mph. Localized higher gusts of 40mph are possible in wind prone areas.
The humidity will drop to between 11 and 18% for 3 to 6 hours. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first
responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
