Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds, which begins at 1:00p.m. and ends at 11:00 tonight.
Along with eastern Lassen County and the Honey Lake Valley, the affected areas include Surprise Valley and northern Washoe County.
According to the forecast thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon and
continuing into the evening. Storms will be fast moving and becoming more isolated
further north, with potential to produce dry lightning.
Gusty and erratic outflow winds from showers and storms, even well away from rain cores, is expected. Gusts will be around 45mph.
Lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
