The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued both a Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Watch for Lassen, eastern Plumas and eastern Sierra counties, bringing a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat to Susanville, Westwood, Portola, Loyalton, Sierraville and surrounding communities.
The initial Heat Advisory takes effect from 8:00a.m. Wednesday through 8:00a.m. Thursday, immediately followed by an Extreme Heat Watch that will remain active from Thursday morning through Sunday morning.
Here in the Honey Lake Valley temperatures are expected to climb to between 95 and 102 degrees during the peak of this event, with overnight lows offering only minor relief as they hover between 58 and 65 degrees.
With widespread Moderate Heat Risk expected across the region, heat-related illnesses become significantly more likely. This risk is especially high for anyone spending extended periods outdoors, those residing in poorly cooled indoor environments, or individuals who are particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures.
To stay safe throughout the week, residents are strongly encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, limit sun exposure, and remain in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. It is also vital to take a moment to check in on relatives, elderly neighbors, and vulnerable community members.
