The Lassen Fire Safe Council is inviting the public to attend its next general meeting tomorrow, September 17th, at 5:30p.m. The meeting will be held at the Susan River Fire Hall, located at 707-145 Hwy 395 in Johnstonville. The focus of the event will be on “Home Hardening” and will feature guest speakers who will provide valuable information for local homeowners.
The meeting will include a presentation from Laura Blaul of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, who will speak remotely via Zoom. Blaul will be discussing the Wildfire Prepared Home™ program, which offers homeowners science-based strategies to significantly reduce their property’s risk from wildfire.
Also speaking will be Yvonne Bennett, a Lassen Fire Safe Council Board Member. Bennett has firsthand experience as a leader of a Firewise community in Shingletown and will share cost-effective ways to retrofit and harden homes to meet evolving insurance requirements.
Attendees will learn about low-cost methods to create defensible space and harden their homes, such as regularly cleaning roofs and gutters, removing combustible materials from decks, and using noncombustible materials for landscaping and mulching.
The meeting will also cover methods for hardening homes themselves, including installing noncombustible gutter covers, blocking gaps in roofing and siding, and replacing windows with tempered, multi-paned glass.
Light refreshments will be served at the meeting. For those unable to attend, the Lassen Fire Safe Council hopes to turn the presentation into a short webinar and post it on its website for later viewing.
