The Lassen County Office of Education brought its “Math Pop-Up Night” to Westwood last Wednesday evening. The event offered a refreshing take on mathematics, demonstrating to students and parents alike that numbers are about far more than just worksheets and calculators.
The goal of the evening was clear: to showcase the real-world power of math in a setting that was meaningful, practical, and—most importantly—fun.

Families spent the evening rotating through a series of hands-on stations designed to bridge the gap between abstract concepts and everyday life. From the kitchen to the music room, students were encouraged to see math in action:
Culinary Calculations: Students experimented with measuring cups to create their own snacks, providing a delicious lesson on how individual parts combine to form a whole.
Skill-Building Play: Interactive math games allowed students to sharpen their foundational skills in a low-pressure, high-engagement environment.
The Rhythm of Numbers: Perhaps the evening’s biggest hit was exploring math through music. Students discovered the inherent connections between rhythm, drumming, patterns, and fractions.
Beyond the student-focused activities, the event served as a bridge for parents to gain confidence in supporting their children’s education. By providing simple, practical strategies, the LCOE aimed to empower families to continue the learning journey at home, even when tackling challenging concepts.
LCOE Communications Specialist Kaitlyn Midgely noted that the success of the evening was a direct result of the partnership with local educators. “We are grateful to Westwood School District for partnering with us to make this event a success,” said Midgely.
For those who missed the fun, the LCOE is eager to keep the momentum going. Midgely added that they are currently looking to expand these collaborative opportunities. If your school district is interested in hosting a Math Night, you can reach out to the office to start the conversation.
