On Friday, Westwood Unified School District, Westwood PTSA, and Lassen Municipal Utility District, hosted its annual Egg Drop Competition for Westwood students, a high-flying event that brought together creativity, collaboration, and a whole lot of suspense!
This year’s event saw 62 imaginative entries, with only twenty-one eggs surviving the dramatic 70-foot drop from an LMUD bucket truck. The students behind the surviving contraptions were rewarded with fun prizes from a bin full of goodies, celebrating their engineering ingenuity.
The excitement was guided by Mr. Foy, Westwood’s spirited junior high teacher and emcee, who narrated each drop with enthusiasm and precision. Music and sound were expertly provided by Cory Rickert, Westwood High School’s ELA teacher, who kept the energy high and the beats going throughout the event.
The event was made possible thanks to generous support from the Westwood PTSA, and egg donations from Elizabeth and Jason Smith. A special thank you goes to Raul Faustino and the entire LMUD crew for bringing out the bucket truck and helping make this tradition come alive, literally, from great heights.
In preparation for the competition, eighth-grade students partnered with the TK/Kindergarten class, helping the younger students design and build their egg-protecting contraptions.
This peer collaboration highlighted the spirit of mentorship and teamwork across grade levels. Other students spent the last several weeks independently crafting their devices — which ranged from “flying pigs” to pool noodle-wrapped pods — showcasing impressive imagination and problem-solving.
Westwood Unified is proud to celebrate student innovation, school spirit, and community partnerships through this engaging STEM-centered tradition. They would like to thank everyone who helped make the 2025 Egg Drop Challenge a cracking success!
