One of my favorite parts about working at Lassen College is being part of our Correctional Officer Core Academy… the unsung hero of law enforcement training.
This isn’t the big state academy that trains officers for the prison; this one’s all about preparing corrections staff who keep local jails running safely and professionally.
Within their first year on the job, every new correctional officer comes through this program and we’re proud to say we train officers from counties all over the state. It’s pretty special to see so many departments trust Lassen College with developing their people.
Over the course of several weeks, we cover it all defensive tactics, ethics, searches, handcuffing, use-of-force escalation, communication, and much more. It’s not just physical training; it’s professional development designed to build confidence, integrity, and teamwork. And the best part? I get to meet them all.
For a short time, I get to be part of that brotherhood and sisterhood of law enforcement again the camaraderie that never really leaves you, even after you hang up the badge.
This week marks my sixth academy graduation, and each one has been unique.
Every class brings its own energy, stories, and challenges and usually a few moments that make me laugh at myself. I always feel especially proud when we have our local Lassen guys and gals in the mix, representing our community with pride and heart.
The most rewarding thing, though, is seeing how far they’ve gone. Some of the students from my very first academy are now sworn officers out on the road.
Watching them make that leap and succeed reminds me why we do this — because helping shape the next generation of law enforcement professionals is both an honor and a privilege.
