This week’s spotlight shines on a local legend who’s been roping in success and corralling hearts at Lassen College – none other than Dan Williams, the rodeo coach extraordinaire!
Dan, along with his wife Suzanne, forms the dynamic duo at the helm of Lassen College’s rodeo program.
And let me tell you, folks, this isn’t your average 9-to-5 gig. These two are wrangling a team that competes not just against other community colleges but takes on the big schools from universities like Cal Poly and Chico State.
Now, you might think coaching rodeo is all about teaching students to stay on a bucking bronco for 8 seconds. But Dan’s job description reads more like a mix between a travel agent, logistics coordinator, and animal whisperer. Imagine planning a road trip where half your passengers are 1,000-pound animals that don’t exactly fit in the overhead compartment.
But Dan takes it all in stride, leading his team to impressive achievements that often fly under the radar. While most of us are still hitting the snooze button, Dan’s already been up for hours, probably practicing fixing or building something at the college, because is he also the head of Maintenance.
What really sets Dan apart, though, is his heart. He’s not just coaching a sport; he’s shaping young lives and building a community. And let’s not forget, he’s doing all this while being a devoted husband and father.
Now, if you’ve seen Dan around town, you might think he’s all business. With his weathered Stetson, and oh so serious stride, coupled with that no-nonsense look in his eye- he’s every inch a cowboy. But let me tell you, there’s a whole lot more to Dan than meets the eye.
Sure, Dan’s tough when he needs to be. (You don’t coach a college rodeo team without having a bit of grit). But beneath that rough exterior is a huge heart. Don’t even get me started on how Dan is with his son. That tough cowboy turns into a big ol’ softie when his little kiddo is around.
Watching Dan teach his boy to rope is like seeing years of rodeo wisdom being passed down right before your eyes. But it’s not just his family that brings out Dan’s softer side.
His students at Lassen College will tell you stories that’ll warm your heart. Like the times he has stayed hours after practice to help a discouraged rider get back in the saddle. Or how he’s been known to dig into his own pocket to help a student who’s fallen on hard times.
So next time you see Dan Williams around town, remember – that tough cowboy exterior is hiding a heart of gold. He might not be one for flowery words or big shows of emotion, but his actions speak loud and clear.
Here’s to you, Dan Williams – a true cowboy, a devoted family man, and a pillar of our community. You remind us every day why we love this place we call home. Keep on ridin’ coach. We’re all better for having you here.
