Why We Love This Place Wednesday: Domestic Violence Awareness

By Terra Avilla

Hey there, my friends! It’s your favorite small-town columnist back with another “Why We Love This Place Wednesday” article. This week, though, we’re taking a slightly more serious turn to discuss something that impacts our community – domestic violence awareness.

I recently attended the annual wreath-laying ceremony honoring our fallen local officers who tragically lost their lives due to domestic violence.

It was a poignant reminder of how this issue can touch all of us, even in our close-knit town. The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute, and it really struck me how vital it is for us to acknowledge and address this pressing issue.

Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate; it affects individuals of all ages, genders, races, and backgrounds. In fact, on average, nearly 20 people per minute experience physical abuse by an intimate partner in the United States. That’s a staggering statistic and one that we can’t afford to ignore.

The consequences are often fatal, with 1 in 3 female homicide victims and 1 in 20 male homicide victims being killed by intimate partners. Even more heart breaking is the impact on children, with over 15 million children in the United States living in households where partner violence has occurred at least once in the past year. 15 million children A YEAR.

We all should be alarmed and outraged about what this epidemic is doing to the children in our country.

But here’s where my signature optimism kicks in – we can make a difference! Our incredible Lassen Family Services is gearing up for their annual fundraiser, “Dancing for a Brand New Me.” I’ll be there rooting for those brave souls who are hitting the dance floor for this important cause.

This fundraiser directly supports our local domestic violence shelter, providing a safe haven for those escaping abusive situations. These shelters are not just places to stay; they offer counseling, legal advocacy, and a chance at a new beginning. They are truly lifesavers.

Now, I know this topic isn’t as lighthearted as my usual musings about the best pie at the county fair or that time I got chased by an especially feisty goose at the park. But it’s essential that we engage in these conversations. Awareness is the first step toward prevention and support.

So, here’s my call to action, dear readers: Let’s show up in force for the “Dancing for a Brand New Me” fundraiser. Even if you can’t attend, consider making a donation to Lassen Family Services.

And most importantly, let’s keep our eyes and ears open for our neighbors who might be struggling. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make all the difference.

Remember, Lassen we love this place because of the people in it. Let’s ensure we’re taking care of one another.

Until next week—when I promise to regale you with tales of my latest misadventure (spoiler alert: it involves a runaway shopping cart and a very patient grocery clerk) – stay safe and stay kind!
