This week, “Why We Love This Place Wednesday” shines the spotlight on Oliver S. – or as we all know him, Ollie.
Writing about kids like Ollie is a true joy, because they remind us just how much hope and promise the next generation holds.
Ollie is the definition of tough. On the mats, he’s an athlete and a competitor through and through. He trains hard, never shies away from a challenge, and brings a fierce spirit to every class. But what makes Ollie really special is that he knows when to be kind.
He has an incredible ability to balance his competitive edge with genuine care for others, especially when working with the younger kids in our jiu jitsu camp.
It’s not just his athleticism or determination that sets Ollie apart. He’s a great student, a loyal friend, and a caring big brother.
Ollie is also very funny. I think I forget sometimes that kids are these little independent human beings with great big personalities and Ollie helps remind me of that. He is such a good listener that when he talks, I am often amazed at how funny he is… like not fart noises and buttcrack jokes. Like actually well-timed, thought out funny.
Whether he’s helping a teammate learn a new move or encouraging someone who’s feeling nervous, Ollie always finds the right moment to show kindness and I never, ever, EVER have to tell him to stop goofing off, or to listen. He just already does.
Ollie brings out the best in those around him. He reminds us that real strength isn’t just about being tough – it’s about knowing when to be gentle, too. Ollie is one of the reasons I love where we live.
