There are students you remember for their grades, and then there are students you remember because they’re just Zayn Wright.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to have a “one in a million” kid in your life, let me tell you: it’s a little bit like winning the lottery, but with more laughter and fewer taxes.
As a teammate, classmate, friend, Zayn doesn’t just show up – he consistently shows up for others. Whether it was in the halls, on the field, or in the middle of a heated class discussion about why pineapple does (or does not) belong on pizza, he led with kindness and conviction.
He’s the kind of leader who makes you want to follow, even if you’re just following him to the vending machine.
Let’s be honest and give credit – where credit is due – you don’t get to be this good without some top-tier parenting, and Zayn is proof that Johnelle and Bubba did something very, very right.
He’s got the best of both of them – steady, generous and always the first to stick up for someone else. If there was ever a moment when someone needed a friend, Zayn is the “Wright” guy for the job. He usually has a quick joke and a smile that could talk you off the ledge of a bad day.
As his teacher, I got a front-row seat to Zayn’s candor and humor. He’s the kind of kid who will tell you if your lesson plan is a little off, but he’ll do it with such charm that you’ll actually thank him for it. He made class better for everyone, including me – and let’s face it, that’s not an easy feat before 8:00a.m.
Zayn is off to play for the Cougs, and yes, my husband gets to coach him next. I’m writing this now, because come fall, I’ll have to pretend I’m totally unbiased (which, let’s be real, will be a challenge). But right now, I get to say it: Zayn Wright is the kind of student, athlete, and human being who makes this place special.
We’re all better for having known him – and if you ever get the chance to meet him, you’ll understand exactly why. Congratulations, Zayn. Don’t forget us when you’re famous. Or at least, don’t forget to send snacks, and don’t forget most importantly, you are one of the reasons I love where we live.
