Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Adam Runyan

By Terra Avilla

Just like good Ole Frank isn’t a fan of me telling him suggestions for plays on the baseball diamond, I sometimes get offended when he offers suggestions on who I should write about. Like this week. Leaving church and we saw Adam Runyan and his wonderful wife.

Frankie responds with his typical, “I love me some Adam Runyan,” and the “he is my guy” kind of talk.

Then ultimately, he gets to the “You should write about him!” type of comments.

Well, this week that is exactly what happened, and I indignantly replied, “I know Frankie, and I have written about Adam.” Only to reflect… and can you believe it, I actually haven’t! How could this be?

Someone who is such a pivotal, a well-loved person in our community. I guess I just assumed that I had, because, after all, I definitely should have by now. So, without further ado, let’s get into the marvelous human being that is Adam Runyan.

Now, Adam is like me, in the respect that he will talk to anyone. Like, literally, I’ve seen it. He can carry on a conversation and has a knack for including everyone in the conversation. A trait I have really grown to appreciate in a person as I have grown older.

Unlike me, however, Adam has the ability to be energetic, but also knows when to be mellow and has a very calming nature. I have seen countless interactions with him and youth and they migrate to him, and they listen to him.

Adam currently works at Lassen College, (which is where he first entered Frankie’s life). I have seen him at several events, and it is evident that he not only loves his job, but he honestly cares about the students he serves.

Outside of his work and church life, Adam has a very fascinating life story. Most of which, I will let Adam tell you, because he is a natural speaker, and is way more engaging than I can be. And I suggest you ask him about the story he has told me probably six times in our nine-year friendship, about him running from the police in his teen years. I promise you won’t regret it.

I will disclose what a humanitarian he is, at one point, him and Kris (his beautiful bride) lived in Ukraine. (One of his daughters was actually born there).

The more you get to know Adam, the more of these wonderful, interesting facts you find out. He is an extraordinarily complex person, with a very giving heart.

Lastly, I could not write this article, and not mention the fact, that good ole Adam beat me in my very first year of Dancing for A Brand New Me. (And trust me, he doesn’t let me forget it either.) But what I am saying, is you should also ask Adam about his dancing experience, because I (and the audience) were blown away at how well he moved.

Adam is a beautiful person inside and out and is married to a beautiful person inside and out, and wouldn’t you know it – he is raising two beautiful daughters, who are beautiful – inside and out.

Adam, I’m sorry this is delayed, but in my defense, I thought I had already written about why you are one of the reasons I love the place we live.
