Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Bradley Pon

By Terra Avilla

Welp. I think the time has come to discuss one of the very, very first people I ever met in Susanville.

In fact, this person possibly played one of the biggest roles in me deciding to uproot my life, and career, in Reno to move to Susanville.

He also, by the way, is responsible for giving me the very loving (and original) moniker as the “girl cop.” You may know him as a Sergeant with the Lassen County Deputy Sheriff’s Office, however when I met him, he was a Susanville Police Officer. The one, the only, Bradley Pon.

Now, like most of my first friends in Susanville, I met him through Frankie. He and Frankie had met playing baseball or slow pitch softball, or some combination of the two.

As Frankie and I were trying to navigate the logistics of moving our life forward when we got married, he told me that his friend (Brad) was a police officer here and that I should do a ride along with him… so I did. It was during that time that Brad gave me a tour of the city. He encouraged me to apply and sang the praises of the joys of living and working here.

He also helped me through the application process and was very helpful. Once I gained employment, working with him, he quickly treated me like his sister, and was less helpful, but way funnier.

In fact, he was the only person in the world that could call me “big bertha” while I was pregnant, and I thought it was funny and not insulting because of the relationship we had.

Off duty, I got the pleasure of hanging out with Brad often, and it was soon after that, that I was introduced to his girlfriend Meagan. Who I ADORE. The two of them were some of my very first real friends in Susanville. Such good friends that when Peach dumped hot wax on their white couch, they weren’t mad, and even invited us back into their home.

Anyone who has met Brad will tell you how funny he is. It is hard to be in a bad mood when he is around. He just has this way, that everyone likes him. He is a good cop, and the Sheriff’s Office is extremely lucky to have him.

When he is not traveling the world with his bride, or at work, Bradley is volunteering with youth in some way, shape or form. He is absolutely amazing with kids. Especially with the older teens. He is someone they obviously respect and admire. He sets a positive example, and I know that they love him.

I see Brad a couple of times a week, and he never fails to make me smile. Brad has invested in this community, not only through his service in Law Enforcement, but by his dedication to our youth.

I am thankful that he was the first person I met here, and I am even more thankful he is still in my life nearly ten years later, as he was the first reason (after Frankie) that I love the place we live.
