Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Kelly Bigard at Port of Subs

Kelly Bigard, owner of the Susanville Port of Subs and a reason Why We Love This Place

By Terra Avilla

Not very often do I get to feel like I am part of the clique in Susanville that ‘remembers when.’  This week, I can honestly say that I do remember when ‘Kelly at Port Subs’ was ‘Kelly at Subway’.

Lil’ Ms Kelly Bigard and her infectious smile was one of my very first memories of Susanville.  She worked at the Susanville Subway restaurant that I always frequented when I would travel to see Frankie, long ago when we were dating.

Her friendliness is engrained in my memory.  Even though technically at the time, I was from ‘out of town’ Kelly still made it a point to get to know my name and would ask me questions about how wedding planning and my job transfer was going.

When I first moved here Kelly’s friendly face was one of the very first things that started to make Susanville feel like home.

Since that day, years ago, Kelly now owns and operates Port of Subs here in Susanville. She does this and she does this well.

At any given time during the lunch hour I would bet that you would be able to find at least one law enforcement officer in there getting grub. Kelly makes it no secret that she supports and backs the badge.

She also goes out of her way to support the entire community. She has walls in the shop dedicated to celebrating our local sports teams. During spirit weeks for the High School she decorates the store to match their theme. Not to mention the fact that she is always willing to donate food, or her time, whenever asked to, for pretty much any cause.

Now when I go into the restaurant, I still see that beautiful 1,000-watt smile as she welcomes me and other patrons in the store. Kelly always makes it a point to come and give me a hug.

Her staff are always helpful, and I can honestly say that I have never had a bad experience with the quality of food or service there. Kelly makes the place feel like home, and she makes all of the customers feel like family.

When I was just some strange girl with Nevada license plates, ordering sandwiches, Kelly didn’t care. I was literally an outsider, and yet Kelly genuinely expressed interest in my life, and cared enough to remember details I had given her weeks prior.

When Frankie has recruits coming to look at the area from out of town (or out of state) he always sends them to Port of Subs.  Why? He knows that the boys are going to be greeted by Kelly and her staff, the best, unofficial welcoming wagon we as a community could hope for.

She is genuine, honest, hardworking and community driven. She runs her business with the highest of the standards while still making sure she pours support back into our community.

Have you visited another Port of Subs?  Our local branch has ruined them for me. They just can’t measure up.  I encourage all of you to support this wonderful business driven by such a wonderful heart.

Kelly – you were part of the reason I loved this place before I even lived here.
