Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Melanie Westbrook

By Terra Avilla

It used to be that when people were described as “firecrackers” I never really understood the reference. Then I met Melanie, and I definitely understood.

I don’t remember how I met Melanie Westbrook, all I remember is that she is a lot. A lot of energy. A lot of spirit. A lot of mental fortitude. A lot of tenderness and thoughtfulness in one person. That I remember.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Melanie, she is the owner of Sierra Desert Properties. That’s right, she is a business owner, running a very successful business. Aside from managing her business and helping our community find places to live, Melanie somehow makes time to pour support back into her community.

Melanie is currently on the Historic Uptown Susanville Association. A non-profit organization that strives to help support the businesses in beautiful uptown Susanville.

Melanie spends countless hours volunteering on the committee, arranging wine walks (please go to one – they are awesome), or Farmers’ markets, or rallying for the business owners to try to ensure that the public is frequenting their businesses.

Additionally, Melanie is a proud Rotarian and spends a lot of her time volunteering for ancillary programs and activities with them.

Melanie though, still finds time to donate money and her time, to pretty much any cause when asked. She really is a person who just wants to make a difference.

Melanie was one of our guest speakers at the Susanville Police Explorer Girl’s Camp. Melanie made time to come in and read stories to our campers.

Melanie is a strong female, community leader. She spoke about the importance of making personal choices and what it takes to make a leader, and she would definitely know.

Additionally, I recently asked Melanie if we could use her building (a large warehouse) to practice building searches. Our Explorers were itching to try a new location as ‘clearing’ the police department becomes redundant. Without any hesitation, Melanie offered her warehouse for us to use.

She could have easily said no, or made some sort of excuse, however, Melanie wants to help.

That little firecracker is definitely one of the reasons I love the place we live.
