Wildfire Bulletin: Lightning Triggers Multiple Vegetation Fires Across County

Update 4:48p.m. According to Lassen OES Chief Eric Ewing resources are being released from the R-2 fire which has been burning near the top of Shaffer Mountain. Ewing said that firefighters have made really good progress on the fire, mitigating all threats to infrastructure.

The fire was burning near the mountaintop radio facility on Shaffer which houses communications equipment for a host of agencies.

NorCal BLM is currently working 15 fires across the county. According to BLM spokesperson Jeff Fontana the fires are mostly small and are in an area ranging from skedaddle mountain to near dodge reservoir.

Along with the Shaffer Mountain fire the BLM is focusing its attention on a 50-acre fire east of skedaddle mountain.

Fontana said that a variety of air resources are working that fire.

2:54p.m. Lightning, which stitched a path across Lassen County this morning, has sent crews scrambling to fight nearly a dozen fire starts, some visible from here in the Honey Lake Valley. Forecasters are predicting another round of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

According to Lassen County OES Chief Eric Ewing the largest fire burning at the moment is on the northwest side of Shaffer Mountain. The R-2 fire has burned around 70-acres in rugged terrain with no vehicle access.

Currently there are four air tankers, one helicopter, one engine and 5 hand crews working the R-2 fire.

There are several smaller lightning-started fires visible from the east end of the Honey Lake Valley. Two fire in the Doyle area and one near the Nevada border where thunderstorms moved through about noon.

More lightning starts trace a line up the map from near the north end of Eagle Lake to Cedarville. Most of these fires are single-tree with limited extension into grass and other vegetation.

This is live coverage of a developing story. This post will be updated as new information arrives.
