Woodcutting Suspended in Forest Service Zone V

Along with the arrival of wet weather comes the need to suspend fuelwood cutting on the Eagle Lake Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest.

The affected area corresponds to Zone V on the Forest Service’sĀ fuelwoodĀ cutting map, which accompanies fuelwoodĀ permits at the time of purchase.

Eagle Lake District Ranger Ann Carlson has issued the temporary closure, effective today, January 31st.

The provision for this measure is containedĀ in Section D.1 of the Fuelwood Cutting Requirements. The closure helps to prevent resource damage and ruts from being created in roads and meadows where woodcutters drive to get to firewood.

Although the Eagle Lake District is closedĀ to firewood cutting until warmer, drier weather, both the AlmanorĀ and Hat Creek Districts of the Lassen National Forest remain open to woodcutting. Depending on conditions, Zone V is expected to re-open sometime in late May or early June.

The policy of closing areas to woodcutting was implementedĀ during the 1995 season. It continues to be successful in protecting Forest roads and resources, as well as the property of adjacent landowners.

Please contact the Eagle Lake Ranger District at 530-257-4188 with questions about this temporary closure.
