Woodcutting Suspended in Forest Service Zone V

Along with the arrival of winter weather comes the need to suspend fuelwood cutting on the Eagle Lake Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest.

The affected area corresponds to Zone V on the Fuelwood Cutting Map, which accompanies fuelwood permits at the time of purchase. Eagle Lake District Ranger Ann Carlson has issued the temporary closure, which goes into effect January 1st, 2014.

The provision for this measure is contained in Section D.1 of the Fuelwood Cutting Requirements. The closure helps to prevent resource damage and ruts from being created in roads and meadows where woodcutters drive to get to firewood.

Although the Eagle Lake Ranger District will be closed to firewood cutting until warmer, drier weather, both the Almanor and Hat Creek Ranger Districts of the Lassen National Forest will remain open to woodcutting. Depending on conditions, Zone V is expected to re-open sometime in late May or early June.

The policy of closing areas to woodcutting was implemented during the 1995 season. It continues to be successful in helping to protect Forest roads and resources, as well as the property of adjacent landowners.

Please contact the Eagle Lake Ranger District at 530-257-4188 with questions about this temporary closure.
