The Susanville Police Officer’s Association is asking local community members and business owners to come be a part of Wednesday evening’s City Council meeting where one of the topics discussed will be the creation of a new K-9 program for the Susanville Police Department.
The City Council Meeting will be held this Wednesday, January 4th, at 7:00p.m., in chambers at 66 North Lassen Street and council members are requesting public comments about the acquisition of the K-9 unit.
“It is the SPOA’s firm belief that a K-9 program is an additional resource that will help the Susanville Police Department better serve this community,” said SPOA President Jesse Leiss in a letter sent to community members. “A canine program provides added protection for the public and the police officers themselves.”
According to Leiss a K-9 unit would help in the detection of controlled substances while interacting with the public – just one of the many advantages of having a K-9 partner. Brinks, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 officer, regular participates in important operations (follow this link for an example) and a K-9 unit could lend the same valuable assistance to the police department.
The SPOA held fundraisers earlier this year to help fund the possible program and several local agencies made contributions as well.
