Bateson shot the 30-second exposure with his Nikon D-7000 through a 12-inch Ritchey Chretien telescope astrograph as the comet made its closest approach to earth on its way in a large turn around the sun at perihelion.
“I took 5 30-second shots and you can easily see it move in relation to the background stars,” said Bateson. “Difficult to find and photograph, it was not at its projected coordinates. Had to photograph it before the moon came up.”
