Bike the Bizz: Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Free Guided Bike Ride

Lassen County residents and visitors can participate in a free guided bike ride on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, Saturday, September 30th, starting from the historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Road at 3:00p.m.

Adventure Cycling Association is offering the ride as part of its “Bike Your Park” campaign.  It also celebrates National Public Lands Day.

“This event is a nice addition to our partnerships with community organizations that encourage people to enjoy the benefits of public lands,” said Stuart Mitchell, acting field manager for the Bureau of Land Management’s Eagle Lake Field Office.

Riders will convene at the depot parking lot, and depart at 3:00p.m. for a 14-mile round trip to the Devil’s Corral Trailhead.

Mountain bikes or hybrid bikes are best for the ride. Riders will cross the Susan River 11 times on historic railroad bridges and pass through two historic railroad tunnels.  Fall colors will be emerging on vegetation in the Susan River Canyon.

Adventure Cycling Association is a nationwide, non-profit organization that encourages people to travel by bicycle.

Additional information is available by telephoning Jim Graham at (541) 224-1208.

Cyclists who prefer an earlier ride can take advantage of the Lassen Rural Bus Saturday shuttle, departing the railroad depot at 8:30 a.m. with stops at Devil’s Corral, Fredonyer Summit and Westwood.  These stops provide for return bike rides to Susanville of 7, 18, and 30 miles. There is a bus fee.

More information is available from the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, telephone (530) 257-0456.
