The leading cause of death for Americans age 15 to 20 is motor vehicle collisions. The California Highway Patrol’s goal is to reduce the death rate among teenagers as a result of these collisions.
Getting their driver’s license opens a new world to young drivers. Suddenly, the possibility of new destinations and experiences with friends are within grasp. But a new driver lacks the experience that is sometimes needed on the road.
Situations can appear in a second, sometimes too fast for a new driver to respond to. But, there are ways to avoid dangerous situations. There are ways to keep a new driver – and their passengers – safe on the road.
According to the CHP teen drivers are found at fault in 66% of all fatal collisions that they are involved in, although they only represent 4% of the state’s licensed drivers.
The Susanville Area CHP will be hosting the Start Smart program on Tuesday, September 18th, beginning at 6:00p.m. in the Lassen High School Library.
The class, which will last about two hours, will cover a variety of subjects including licensing requirements, safe driving practices, choices vs. consequences, DUI, and distracted driving.
Parents are strongly encouraged to attend with their student. The class is free.
