CHP Conducting School Bus Safety Enforcement Operation Thursday

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve school zone safety in Susanville, the California Highway Patrol will be conducting a school zone enforcement operation that will focus on traffic safety for school busses. The enforcement operation will take place on September 14th, at an undisclosed location in Lassen County.

“Regrettably,” explains Susanville area CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn, “every year students are injured and even killed while entering or upon exiting school busses. The CHP is committed to preventing these tragic events and is leading the effort with proactive enforcement and education programs.”

“The CHP is conducting this public awareness and enforcement program to educate and encourage members of the community to develop and maintain safe practices while passing school busses. The public is reminded that it is illegal to pass a school bus that has stopped, while its lights are flashing red and its stop signal arm is extended.”

According to Wilburn school bus enforcement actions are an effective way to communicate laws to the public. The CHP conducts school bus enforcement actions in response to community requests and to educate the public on the rules of the road.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
