Unexploded military ordnance was discovered on property in the Johnstonville area last week, and was quickly disposed of by a team from the Fallon Naval Air Station, working with the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Sheriff Dean Growdon, deputies responded to a residence located east of Johnstonville on Hwy 395 East after a device was discovered that appeared to be unexploded munitions.
“Deputies photographed the item and forwarded the pictures to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team at the Naval Air Station in Fallon Nevada,” explains Sheriff Growdon. “EOD personnel confirmed the item was indeed military ordnance that should be properly disposed of.”
Sheriff’s Deputies secured the device overnight and the EOD unit disposed of the item the following day with a controlled explosion.
The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind people to be aware that military ordnance and other explosives are sometimes found in Lassen County. If you find something that could be military ordnance, commercial explosives or an improvised explosive device, follow the three R’s – Recognize, Retreat and Report.
