Fire Does Heavy Damage to Wildwood Way Home

firedepartmentstuffA residence on Wildwood Way in Susanville suffered heavy damage Saturday evening from a fire which officials say began in an attached garage and spread to the rear of the structure before firefighters could knock down the flames.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene of the fire they reported heavy smoke coming from an attached garage and from the rear of the structure.

According to the department firefighting efforts were hampered by an accumulation of household trash in the garage and an open door from the garage into the kitchen. There was heavy fire damage to approximately 50 % of the single story residence and smoke and heat damage to the remainder of the home.

The occupants were relocated by Red Cross to a local motel.

There were 10 fire apparatus and 27 firefighters on scene to battle the blaze and no fire fighter injuries were reported. The Susanville Fire Department was assisted by: Susan River Fire Protection District, Janesville Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, Susanville Police Department, American Red Cross, Lassen Municipal Utility District, and Susanville City Public Works.

The probable cause of the fire was determined to be from heat generated from the composting process of household waste being stored in the garage.
