Record setting heat and a smoky haze only added to the urgency of the training last Wednesday as law enforcement and emergency services personnel from agencies in our area attended the Susanville Police Department’s active-assailant training drill held at the Lassen County Fairgrounds.

The training this year was designed to test first responders’ reaction to an incident occurring in a large, open area and was moved to the fairgrounds after being held in previous years at Lassen High and Lassen Community College.

“We purposefully made the scenarios difficult this year,” explains Officer Terra Avilla who coordinated the exercise, which involved hundreds of participants. “We wanted to really challenge our teams and, per usual, all responders rose to the occasion.”

Personnel at the fairgrounds included representatives from High Desert State Prison, California Correctional Center, SEMSA, Lassen Public Health, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Banner Lassen Medical Center and Lassen OES.

Avilla made special mention of the role-playing volunteers who braved the triple-digit temperatures and who, she said, never fail to deliver.

Different scenarios at Wednesday’s training involved a bomb in the grandstands, hostage taking and a vehicle driven through a crowd.

Lisa Bernard, Youth Services Officer for LCSO said, “It was amazing to see the coordination of agencies and their level of support for each other and their commitment to creating as realistic of an experience as possible.”

“They take this exercise very seriously and their focus is always how to serve their community better, more efficiently and with a lot of heart. Their care for each other and the role players was what struck me the most. I was honored to be a part of it.”

Despite being fake it should be mentioned that the images in the gallery are somewhat frightening – portraying real graphic violence at the fairgrounds.
