Lassen Sportsmens Club Forced to Cancel Annual Fishing Derby

The Lassen Sportsmens Club announced Tuesday that the 2020 Junior Fishing Derby, originally scheduled for April and then tentatively rescheduled for August 1st would be cancelled because of a lack of water in the river this late in the season.

Sportsmens Club president Wade Workman met with interim City Administrator Kevin Jones, Lassen County Administrative Officer Richard Egan and Ramsey Wood who oversees agricultural water usage in regards to the Susan River.

According to Wood, McCoy, Hog Flat and Long Lake reservoirs were drained down to their lowest level on July 3rd, and the Susan River would be a bare trickle by the August 1st derby date.

“Taking all this information into consideration,” said Workman, “the Lassen Sportsmens Club committee has deemed it necessary to cancel the 31st annual Junior Fishing Derby.”

“We are greatly saddened by this decision however, feel it is what’s best for our participants.”
