Celebrating Mom This Mother’s Day

Most of us will spend this Mother’s Day honoring the woman who brought us into this world.  Whether it’s a simple phone call or a big family gathering, remembering mom each May is a way to thank her for all the things she has done and more than likely is still doing for us.

If you think back you might recall a few times when mom was the only person you could call, or she might have been the person you so desperately didn’t want to call but had to anyway, and she took it in stride.  She stood by at every sports game, county fair and every school play. She made your lunch, although you didn’t always care for what was in it or the loving affection written on a napkin tucked inside.

Being a mother is a job that is often overlooked as an actual vocation.  The job description usually entails long hours, overtime, chauffeur, cook, maid, tutor, coach, counselor, referee, nurse, financial planner and the ability to fix anything with a band aid.

The statistics on mothers has changed over the last few years with more mothers returning to the workforce to help juggle motherhood and careers. There are roughly 5 million stay-at-home moms in America and that is slightly down from 2008 pre-recession according to the United States Census Bureau.

Despite the fact that mothers might be working more, they still are responsible for their motherly duties – making work and family a balancing act.  As many of us who have mother’s who worked can remember mom coming home from work, and then working into the night with us on our homework, science project or making a last minute trip to the store because one neglected to tell her we needed 50 cup cakes, tomorrow morning, and it’s now 10:00p.m. the night before.

Take the time out to thank mom, treat her to a special meal, give her five minutes of alone time, sing her favorite song or remember her wisdom if she is no longer here.  What ever you do mom will love it, because usually the thing about moms is they love us no matter what.
