NWS Weather Bulletin: Dry Lightning Forecast Prompts Red Flag Warning

Red Flag Warning in effect from 5:00p.m. Tuesday until Noon Wednesday

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds, which is in effect from 5:00p.m. this afternoon until noon Wednesday.

In eastern Lassen County, Surprise Valley and northern Washoe County isolated thunderstorms are forecast to develop late this afternoon with the greatest coverage possible overnight tonight. The thunderstorms are expected to produce little rainfall with outflow winds up to 45MPH.

Dry thunderstorms bring us an enhanced risk of new fire starts during the evening and overnight hours after a period of hot and dry weather.

Lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Be prepared for thunderstorm activity and new fire starts. Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
