Residential Fire on Second Street Quickly Extinguished by Firefighters

The Susanville Fire Department is releasing details this morning regarding a residential structure fire that occurred at around 2:00a.m. on Saturday morning.

According to Fire Captain Bradley Medvin, the Susanville Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Susan River Fire District and CAL Fire, responded to the fire on Second Street and when they arrived smoke was seen coming from the roof and attic vents.

Medvin reported that the occupants had already safely removed themselves from the home.

Firefighters had the fire under control within an hour and a half, and quick action on the part of emergency responders saved the occupant’s personal belongings as well as their Christmas presents.

The Susanville Fire Department responded with three fire engines, one ladder truck, and one chief officer. CAL Fire provided one fire engine and the Susan River Fire District provided one fire engine and one chief officer.

An investigation into the cause of the fire, explained Medvin, found that the fire originated from the chimney.

Additional agencies assisting at the incident were the Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriffs Office, LMUD, and the City of Susanville Water Department.

The Susanville Fire Department would like to remind everyone to have their wood stoves, flues, chimneys, and stove pipes cleaned and inspected annually. Test your smoke detectors monthly and change the batteries twice a year.
