Sheriff’s Deputies Find Explosives and Narcotics in Westwood Storage Unit

A Westwood man was placed under arrest Saturday after Deputies served a domestic violence protective order and allegedly found a controlled substance, ammunition and tear gas. A subsequent search of the suspect’s storage unit turned up a cache of ammunition, fentanyl and explosive devices.

According to details provided by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Westwood deputies working ‘proactive patrol’ responded to a storage unit in Westwood and contacted Westwood resident Anthony Kauwe.

“During the course of their contact,” explains LCSO Sergeant Michael Loflin, “Deputies learned that Kauwe was in violation of a domestic violence protective order.”

Kauwe was placed under arrest for the violation and deputies searched him.

“During the search, Deputies discovered Kauwe to be in possession of a controlled substance, ammunition, and tear gas. Deputies were able to confirm Kauwe to be a convicted felon. As a result, Kauwe was arrested for multiple drug and weapon related charges.”

On Saturday, March 9th, Deputies from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on Kauwe’s storage unit.

“During the search of the storage unit, Deputies discovered several firearms, a large quantity of ammunition, fentanyl, scales, and explosive devices.”

The Shasta County Interagency Bomb Squad responded and evaluated the explosive devices, taking possession of them for proper disposal.

Kauwe remains in custody at the Lassen County Jail.

According to Loflin the case has been forwarded to the Lassen County District Attorney’s office for prosecution on the following charges: Thirteen counts of felon in possession of a firearm, thirteen counts of possession of an explosive device, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a loaded firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession of an assault weapon, felon in possession of a flare gun, felon in possession of ammunition and possession of narcotics.

“The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the hard work of the Deputies that handled this investigation. In addition, we thank the Shasta County Interagency Bomb Squad for their assistance,” said Loflin.
