A Susanville man was arrested on a variety of charges Friday after he allegedly robbed Wal-Mart, making off with several cell phones, and then attempted to commandeer a vehicle in the store’s parking lot to make his getaway.
According to details released today by the Susanville Police Department, officers responded to the store at around 8:45p.m., after receiving calls reporting that a suspicious person was attempting to get into a vehicle.
They arrived to discover that an unknown male suspect had forced his way into a vehicle in the parking lot and demanded that the driver take him to the Casino.
“The driver stopped prior to leaving the parking lot, removed the keys from the ignition and the person got out, most likely due to the several people pointing to him while in the vehicle,” said Susanville Chief of Police Kevin Jones.
According to Chief Jones, further investigation revealed the suspect had committed a robbery in Wal-Mart just prior to forcing the family to drive him away.
“The unknown male had told an employee in Wal-Mart that he was robbing them as he made the employee give him several phones from the electronics area.”
The victim in Wal-Mart said the suspect held his hand inside his sweatshirt pocket and made indications he had a weapon, at one point stating, “it’s loaded.”
“Officers later found a male in the DMC Mini-Mart that matched the description of the suspect,” explained Chief Jones. “One of the victims of the crimes made a positive identification that the man the officer found was the suspect.”
The man, identified by police as 40-year old Susanville resident Alfred Willis, was arrested and booked for Robbery, Child endangerment, Burglary and bringing drugs into a jail.
Chief Jones thanked community members who reported seeing Willis acting suspiciously in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
