Adopt A Pet from the Lassen County Animal Shelter – Apollo

Everybody meet Apollo!

This handsome fellow is the perfect-sized travel pal, compact and athletic.

Life at the Lassen County Animal Shelter is stressful for its occupants. Staff strives to make sure each dog gets adequate outside time, plenty of snuggles, and spoiling galore, however adjusting to cement kennels and being viewed by the public can be intimidating and scary.

Not all dogs accept their new reality well and Apollo is one of those unfortunate pups who loves interacting and playing with staff but is unsure of the public when they come into the kennels to view available adoptable dogs.

He will bark and hide, which is a behavior that has most people keep walking to view the next, more ‘friendly’ dog. This first impression is very far from the type of dog Apollo really is.

Apollo is looking for someone patient. Someone willing to sit with him, gain his trust with soft words and treats, and show him that there are other people in the world who understand how hard it can be to go from ‘having it all’ to just hoping that ‘today will be the day’ that he finds a new home.

But as the days and weeks tick by, the shelter becomes home. The routine is familiar to Apollo. The staff are his people. The visiting public are strangers that shouldn’t just be waltzing in. Apollo will bark and alert, letting staff know that there are strange people present. He’s uncertain of approaching the kennel door to greet faces he doesn’t know.

When outside, Apollo has spunk and loves to run and play. He walks well on a lead and has gotten along with other shelter dogs, though he does seem to prefer dogs that are closer to his own size. Staff has decided that Apollo needs more positive exposure to people they don’t know and have started to bring him into the office for periods of time to simply relax and hang out.

Apollo still needs to be neutered but can be adopted from the Lassen County Animal Shelter on a $40 spay/neuter deposit (plus the cost of license), which the adopter will be refunded once they show proof of neuter. It will be the adopter’s responsibility to ensure Apollo is neutered within 60 days and they will be fully responsible for all expenses. However, financial assistance for spay/neuters may be available to Lassen County residents through the Lassen Humane Society. Shelter staff would be happy to answer questions and inquiries at (530) 257-9200.

Additional: If there are dogs already in the home, it is suggested that potential adopters bring them to the shelter to do a meet and greet with the new dog. And as a reminder, the shelter is closed Monday, May 29th, in observance of Memorial Day. It will open again for regular business hours on Tuesday, the 30th.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours during the COVID-19 pandemic are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 257-9200.
