A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10:00 Friday morning above 5000 feet as forecasters from the National Weather Service expect moderate to heavy snow in the higher elevations tonight.
West of Highway 395 the weather bureau is calling for 6 to 14 inches with amounts up to 24 inches near Yuba Pass. East of Highway 395 above 5000 feet 3 to 6 inches are expected.
This afternoon we see winds in the valley gusting up to 70mph, with sustained winds of 20 to 40mph.
Snow levels this afternoon are between 5,500 to 6,500 feet in elevation, lowering to near 5,000 feet this evening.
This afternoon and evening wind and snow will combine to reduce visibility below one-mile at times with whiteout conditions over Yuba Pass and Fredonyer Pass. Travel delays are likely for highways 36, 44, 49 and 89.
Conditions will deteriorate rapidly this afternoon and evening. Slow down and allow extra time when traveling. Remember to carry tire chains, food, water, blankets and a flashlight in case of an emergency. Consider adjusting travel plans to avoid the worst conditions this afternoon and tonight.
High Wind Warning
Winds will be out of the south at 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 70mph. Gusts of 70 to 90mph are expected in wind prone areas along Highway 395.
The wind is causing dangerous travel conditions for high profile vehicles, especially along Highway 395 and in the Sierra Valley. High winds are causing widespread damage to power lines, trees, small structures, fences and roofs.
