CHP Report: Student Injured in Richmond School Parking Lot Traffic Collision

A student at Richmond School sustained minor injuries Wednesday when a vehicle struck a curb, then a metal handrail, which in turn hit a twelve-year old boy who’s name is not being released by the California Highway Patrol because of his age.

According to the CHP report, 70-year old Susanville resident Jenny Diaz was parked in a stall facing the gym in the Richmond School parking lot at about 2:50 Wednesday afternoon, with a raised curb, a 1 foot raised foundation, a metal hand rail and a concrete pole approx 18-inches in diameter between her 2017 Toyota Rav4 and the wall of the gym.

The injured student was standing about two feet away from the metal hand rail on the side away from the vehicle.

“For reasons still under investigation,” CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn explains, “Diaz accelerated forward, over the raised curb and raised concrete foundation, and collided into the metal hand rail.”

The hand rail then folded over and stuck the student in the stomach area, knocking him backwards to the ground. Diaz’ vehicle continued toward the gymnasium and struck the concrete pole where it came to a stop.

The student was treated by emergency responders on scene, and was then transported by ambulance to Banner Lassen Medical Center. He was released later that evening.
